SCANDALOUS
UW Marshfield/Wood County - Helen Connor Laird Building- 2000 West 5th Street, Marshfield - 12:30pm
A one-person show on the life of Restoration dramatist Aphra Behn.
Behn, 1640-1689, was the first woman writing in English to make her living from writing. She wrote approximately 20 plays, scads of poetry and translations, short stories, and some proto-novels, one of which (Oroonoko) has been heralded by literary critics as the “first novel in English.” Behn was also considered to be extremely scandalous in her day, both because she was a published woman writer and because she led a rather unconventional life. The play discusses how Behn might be/is viewed today. Is she still scandalous?
The play is written and performed by Anne Widmayer, associate professor of English from UW-Washington County. Dr. Julie Tharp, associate dean and professor of English, was awarded a grant from the Laird Endowment Fund for the Arts to bring the production to campus in as part of the Introduction to Literature and Women’s Literature courses.
